Eugene, Oregon is the center of the college football universe this afternoon.
Did anyone think to get a "Save Oregon Wrestling" sign visible on national television behind Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreet, and Chris Fowler at ESPN Gameday today? We probably won't have that opportunity again.
This struggle has to be fought on several levels. Chuck Kearney has to get his team ready to wrestle. Believe it or not, wrestling season starts next week for the Ducks in Wyoming. Ron Finley is as busy as a one-armed paper hanger, making sure that no detail is forgotten in preparation for the NWCA All-Star meet in just 16 days.
But some of us, not so well connected, have to work on another plane. The home football season brings more out-of-town Ducks and more media to Eugene than any other event, graduation included. I have heard that the wrestlers handed out business cards at the first home football game, with the name of the web site and advice on how their fellow Ducks can help.
Are there any Save Oregon Wrestling t-shirts and buttons being worn at that giant indoor tailgate party in the Moshofsky Center this afternoon? Anybody haning around the foot of the press box elevator (or the elevators that take the well-healed donors to their skyboxes?) Just the sight of a Save Oregon Wrestling t-shirt will have an effect on some.
I understand that one of our advocates has an appointment to speak to an influential group of donors, and that folks in the Casanova Center are getting nervous about it. Yes, they are indeed afraid of your opposition, that is, if you mount some. Nothing you do for our case is too little or insignificant.
Here in Texas I've been listening to ESPN Gameday/Radio Edition, while driving to work this afternoon. Eugene is indeed ground zero today. The commentators are saying that they're seeing more green and yellow in one place then ever before in their lives.
Are any of those colors being worn in an advocacy role for our cause?
By my count, we have 140 days left to save Oregon wrestling. That's the count until the NCAA meet is over, they pawn off the wrestling mats, give the wrestling room in Esslinger back to the P.E. Department, and hand the coaching staff a check for the balance of their contract.
I'm not trying to be a pest. I'm just wondering. Are all of us doing everything we can?
P.S.: If we really are conducting guerrilla warfare in the Autzen parking lot this afternoon, we need some photographic evidence posted on the web site. It would lift everybody's spirits. I understand the All-Star meet will be advertised on the Duck Vision this evening. Would anybody care to take a picture of it?
