We should all never forget that there's another group trying its dead-level best to Save Oregon Wrestling. Their numbers have been depleted and their future is uncertain.
They couldn't have Thanksgiving dinner like the rest of Oregon's athletes this past Thursday. They had to worry about making weight.
They may think they've been forgotten amid the hoopla about the football, basketball, and cross country teams--written off for dead by an apathetic fan base that isn't quite certain whether their sport is being cut this year or next.
Saturday, while most Ducks were agonizing about an anemic offensive performance by an injury-plagued the football team, our wrestling team was going 3-2 at the Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Indiana.
They did so despite forfeiting a weight at 125. I don't know if the young man was injured or had trouble making weight. But despite starting off with a 6-0 deficit each match, our guys came back to beat Duke, Liberty, and Cumberlands. In the two matches they lost to Ohio and Indiana, there were some close and spirited individual bouts. A few went into overtime.
This comes one week after our guys went 4-0 in the John Hanthingy dual invitational in Golden Colorado.
(Note that the profanity filter in this particular piece of software prevents me from spelling out the surname of the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, from whom the insurance company that sponsored the meet in Colorado took its name. The last syllable of gets automatically changed to "thingy," just to insure I don't offend anyone with a slang reference to a certain part of the male anatomy.)
Hey, wrestling fans, we're 7-2. We may not have beaten the likes of Oklahoma State or that closer-to-home OSU in these early-season matches, but Coach Kearney and his staff--with an excellent job of scheduling--gave their boys a chance to taste success early in the year. Perhaps the momentum will build.
One thing is for certain about this year's squad. But they're wearing those green singlets with all of the pride that any Duck athlete has ever exhibited. We may see them win this year. We may see them lose. But we won't see them quit!
Things get tougher from here. Oregon State invades Mac Court Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. That's a great time slot, except for one thing. Final exams end that day, and most students will have put Eugene in their rear-view mirrors earlier that day or prior.
Our kids have stepped up for us these past few weeks, and now it's our turn. I urge you make two resolutions. First, whatever your schedule, make time to come to the Civil War wrestling match in a couple of weeks. They need us there for them.
Secondly, take a few minutes and drop an encouraging line to a Duck wrestler. Here are their email addresses, modified of course to keep the spam crawlers from victimizing them:
