I admit that I was terribly wrong. My original thoughts were that a propper defensive program would have saved the program....maybe. It now appears that this is not about the sport, but very high paid egos and their own view of the sporting world.
Although Phil Knight makes wrestling gear, he will never profit from the sport as he has from track, basketball, golf, and, yes, baseball. He could save the historically significant Oregon Duck Wrestling program with a word. A man with hundreds of milions at his disposal could save this program (and by the way the sport) with what to him would be just a token effort. He has not!
I don't know if he got a bloody nose from a big jerk wrestler in high school, or suffered some injustice not known by anyone else, but there is more than complacence in his absence in this issue. Does anyone think that he does not know about the loss of this historic program? Get Real!
Phil, there are thousands maybe millions of kids wrestling in clubs , junior high schools, and high schools all across the United States.
This is an active effort to change the world of sport; to remold the world in the immages of Nike's profit centers.
Phil doesn't know me, but I remember buying Tiger shoes in the storefront shop that he and Bill Bowerman rented to stock their imported shoes. Now, many years, and many incarnations later there is a program that very much mirrors the issues of finance facing the Oregon Duck Track program those many years ago. I wonder what his feelings would be if the fabled waffle had flopped? What sentiments would he have if a midwest millionare wanted to drop track to promote the wrestling team?
The strength of The United States of America is not our guns and bullets, but our ability to unite the diverse backgrounds of all our people. If we are to survive in this competitive world, choosing sides and deciding to KILL aspects of our heritage for personal gratification, cannot stand.
Phil Knight, I challenge you to stand up for your almamater now.
