Well, Duck wrestling fans, we all knew it would come to this eventually. Wrestling no longer exists on the official UO athletic department web site. All of the results, records, press books, photographs, etc. have now vanished into a cyber hole.
A couple of months ago Ricky Stewart had to intervene with building maintenance employees to save the wrestling mats from being cut into strips -- as the administration couldn't wait to purge Esslinger Hall of the substitute wrestling room the team has occupied for the last two years.
The maintenance crew found the mats surprisingly heavy, so their answer was to cut them into pieces. Fortunately, Coach Stewart got wind of it, rounded up a crew of wrestlers on short notice, and had the mats carried out without damage.
Now, one sees no evidence of wrestling's existence on the official web site. It dovetails perfectly with the Oregon DOJ's lawyer's arguments in court earlier this month: Wrestling is a done deal. There's no going back.
The funny thing, of course, is there's no listing for competitive cheer, tumbling & gymnastics, or whatever that farcical replacement sport will be named. I guess there's no hurry.
I hope the coach of that endeavor don't have a big ego.
